Conor and Gabe are working together to edit, rewrite, and rerecord some of Conor's recent material for a concept album. We're thinking science fiction and bare acoustic arrangements.

Improbable Songs
# Captain Charles Fort and Janus are aboard the photon zeppelin. Capt. Fort completes their post-launch checklist and prepares for cryosleep.
# The cryogenic musings of Capt. Fort en-route to the Super-Sargasso Star System
# Ada, Capt. Fort's wife, creates a holo-missive (h-mail) for her husband, but then deletes it as it will (theoretically) reach her husband long after she has died. She wonders if the dead can communicate.
# Janus, the ship's sentient computer system unexpectedly reaches enlightenment during a routine diagnostic becoming the first non-biological life form to do so and jeopardizing the mission.
# Capt. Charles Fort wakes from cryosleep to find himself sharing the photon zeppelin with a curious and incomprehensible luminescent octopus. Janus, the ship's sentient navigation system is meditating. Improbably, Capt. Fort has arrived at the Super-Sargasso Star System.
# Capt. Fort attempts to study the star system as the octopus attempts to study Fort. Neither make any progress. The differences in their perception of time are irreconcilable.
# Ada's deleted message reaches Fort in the Super-Sargasso Star System. Deleted messages are the only ones which reach the system. Fort longs to be with his wife again. In an attempt to be helpful, the octopus transports Fort to an alternate (previous?/lost?) reality. Fort sing the song a married woman.
# The story ends, somehow.

Bits of back story:
* Capt. Fort and Janus are part of the Canadian space program. Canada has laid claim to much of the land formally known as the United States, Russia and parts of China. World peace is achieved. Capt. Fort is prone to brief but intense feelings of nationalism.
* The photon zeppelin is an unlikely space craft. It carries no fuel or thrusters. It is comprised of several enormous sails that are transparent to different frequencies of light. Janus the navigational computer arranges these sails in space to harness radiation from various star sources (with various spectral outputs) to create thrust and direction. It's a very complicated affair.
* The super Sargasso star system is the source of all the dark matter and dark energy in the universe. it is where all things lost go. Ironically, Capt. Fort is only able to find the system by first becoming lost.
* Ada, we need to know much more about her.

*The husband is killed or seemingly killed in an experiment.
*The wife mourns his loss.
*The wife longs for a technology to return her husband to her.
*She creates and employs one with unintended consequences.

Multiverse
*Does she pull him from a parallel universe? Is he happy about that? Is the version of her from that parallel universe happy about it?
**If she pulls a version of him from a parallel universe in which they were never married, he might have occasion to sing A married woman.
*Is he not dead, but instead sent to a parallel universe? Perhaps where the husband and wife are not together?
*Maybe he is not dead, but somehow indescribably partially there. Perhaps oscillating between several realities. Maybe the best description is that he is somehow perforated like the line in ambulance.
Lyrics
<pre>
Love comes rolling down the tracks
you can't stop the feeling any more than you can stop a train
you can hop that line and never once look back
or you can spend hours looking behind on where you've been

and when you hit the switch house and you hear that whistle wail
when the ties are rotting out and there's ice along the rail
you can see how it depends upon so many little things
and love is like a train

I don't know where I thought that I would be
When we finally broke down but I don't recognize a thing
I should have had the sense enough to see
That even if I rode forever it would never be for free

And now I could take my tools in hadn and tear this thing apart
And try to fix what's broken and try to get this piece of junk to start
Or else I could cut my losses and salvage everything I can
and put my feet to work again

Because I was walking when I came across this ride
I imagine I'll be walking when I reach the other side
I guess I won't care how I got there by the time I pass on through
Maybe you'll be there to see me when I do
</pre>

I wrote this one with Becky's help, especially on the bridge.

Lyrics
<pre>
there she was on my front page
her name in letters one inch tall
shock nearly killed me at my age
and here i'd thought i'd got 'em all

"THE LAST WOLVERINE IN MICHIGAN IS ON THE LOOSE"
i stood up so fast when i saw that
i spilled my orange juice
i'd cleared those monsters out of michigan
back in my prime
i figured i had one more in me
even after all this time

licked my lips and greased my traps
i sharpened my wolverine knife
filled my canteen, folded my maps
and i set out to end her life

the last wolverine in michigan
was now my prey
a worthy foe! i felt as though
i hadn't aged a day
and i still knew the wilds of michigan
like my back yard
and i thought that i could take her
but i hoped she'd make it hard

and that she did
i tracked her over miles of frozen ground
a bitter wind swirled rumors of her savage scent around
she stripped my traps and licked 'em clean
but i gained on her every night
at last we met in the ravine
i drew me up to my full height

she turned around a little slow
she looked at me with those dark eyes
she laid herself down in the snow
then breathed her last and stole my prize

the last wolverine in michigan
gave up the ghost
she chose the place, i dug the grave
and marked it with a post
oh the ground is cold in michigan
the sky is grey
and the last wolverine in michigan
is in michigan
to stay
Intended Listener
A collection of one's lovers, present and past, in a meeting imagined on a lonely Valentine's Day.
Three Questions
1. Is it better to love many people diffusely or love one person intensely? What if you had to choose just one?
2. Have you seen that new Woody Allen movie Whatever Works? Definitely his best in a decade at least. Anyway, people end up fucking in all kind of permutations, lovers with ex-lovers, friends of ex-lovers, etc. Why is it that when this happens in real life people get pissed at each other?
2b. Do movies present an unrealistic model for love? What movie has most influenced your misguided definition of love?
3. Does love still conquer all or is it just a good refrain?
In a word
ask three questions
<br>1. How about this? "He is quiet and doesn't say much but what he does say amounts to something. That's one thing I like about him. Miss Willonghby was having some work done at the dentists in Northampton the other day and Dr. Nichols said that he was glad Coolidge was going to get married and he hoped his wife would be somebody who would train him right. He said he didn't talk enough, that people thought him unfriendly when quite the opposite was true. I knew that would amuse Calvin so I wrote him about it and he wrote back that he expected I'd make a great deal better man of him but that he didn't believe I'd ever get him to talking much." - Grace Coolidge, in letter to childhood friend Ivah Gale
<br>2. Or this? "For almost a quarter of a century she was borne with my infirmities, and I have rejoiced in her graces." - Calvin Coolidge, from his autobiography
<br>3. Or this? <br>"Men build monuments above the graves of their heroes to mark the end of a great life, but women seek out the birthplace and build their shrine, not where a great life had its ending but where it had its beginning, seeking with a truer instinct the common source of things not in that which is gone forever but in that which they know will again be manifest." - Calvin Coolidge, The Price of Freedom p. 18
The request
imagined singer: john and abigail adams
imagined listener: abigail and john adams

three questions:
<br>1: "I long to hear that you have declared an independancy--and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliar care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation. That your Sex are Naturally Tyrannical is a Truth so thoroughly established as to admit of no dispute, but such of you as wish to be happy willingly give up the harsh title of Master for the more tender and endearing one of Friend. Why then, not put it out of the power of the vicious and the Lawless to use us with cruelty and indignity with impunity. Men of Sense in all Ages abhor those customs which treat us only as the vassals of your Sex. Regard us then as Beings placed by providence under your protection and in immitation of the Supreem Being make use of that power only for our happiness." (abigail adams writing to her husband on 3/31/1776)
<br>2: "This is rather too coarse a compliment, but you are so saucy, I won't blot it out." (john adams writing to abigail on 4/14/1776)
<br>3: "There are few occurences in this Northen climate at this Season of the year to divert or entertain you -- and in the domestick way should I draw you the picture of my Heart, it would be what I hope you still would Love; tho it containd nothing New; the early possession you obtained there; and the absolute power you have ever mantaind over it; leaves not the smallest space unoccupied. I look back to the early days of our acquaintance; and Friendship, as to the days of Love and Innocence; and with an undiscribable pleasure I have seen near a score of years roll over our Heads, with an affection heightned and improved by time -- nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the Image of the dear untittled man to whom I gave my Heart. I cannot sometimes refrain considering the Honours with which he is invested as badges of my unhappiness. The unbounded confidence I have in your attachment to me, and the dear pledges of our affection, has soothed the solitary hour, and renderd your absence more supportable; for had I have loved you with the same affection, it must have been misiry to have doubted. Yet a cruel world too often injures my feelings, by wondering how a person possesst of domestick attachments can sacrifice them by absenting himself for years.
<br>If you had known said a person to me the other day; that Mr. A-s [Adams] would have remained so long abroad; would you have consented that he should have gone? I recollected myself a moment, and then spoke the real dictates of my Heart. If I had known Sir that Mr. A. could have affected what he has done; I would not only have submitted to the absence I have endured; painfull as it has been; but I would not have opposed it, even tho 3 years more should be added to the Number, which Heaven avert! I feel a pleasure in being able to sacrifice my selfish passions to the general good, and in imitating the example which has taught me to consider myself and family, but as the small dust of the balance when compaired with the great community." (abigail to john on 12/23/1782)
This is a song Becky had the idea for, and we've worked together to write it. This is the working title, but I think it'd make sense to have the name of the company in question be the title of the song. Apparently there are several machine shops and glue companies that have actually used variations on this phrase as a slogan. One was a machine shop in NYC between 1905 and 1933 named "Sanford and Son" which we pretty much couldn't use because of the TV of the same name.
Lyrics
Past and future sum
One hundred eighty one
Of four AMs and mornings spent in front of classroom hum

Counting down the days
It seems so long to wait
But June will soon be soon and then we’ll both be on our way

We’ll take a train ride through Nevada
We’ll take a train ride up the coast
We’ll take a train ride through Montana
We’ll take a round-trip journey to home

In a sleeping car built big enough for two
With a laptop and an old guitar and one hell of a view

We’ll take a train ride through the Rockies
We’ll take a train ride up the coast
We’ll take a train ride through Chicago
We’ll take a round-trip journey to home

We’ll return a little bit older
And perhaps in need of a bath
Holding a new store of memories
And smiling we’re glad to be back
This was written after listening to Gabe's country songs for 2009!

YAY. This is a really nice little song, and I'm especially a fan of the bridge. I am fascinated by the Zephyr. SJ and I once talked about naming a long distance musical project after it. If you two are really planning a trip on it, you'll have to tell me all about it! Gabemcelwain 10:01, 4 January 2010 (PST)

I set out to write twelve country songs this year. I did it! A few of these aren't country to the core; some are a little jazzy or showtunesy. Some are just plain old songs without much stylistic distinction that I figured could be played with a country arrangement. But I'm going to gloss over those failures and call the enterprise a success. I'm mighty proud of these tunes.
notes
On this initial demo, I messed up and sang "on me" at the very end, where I meant to sing "my dear", which I like better there.

I like this song, but the tone is maybe a little too all over the place. Sometimes it wants to be fun and sometimes it wants to be genuine. I was fighting off a much jazzier version, trying to get a country feel instead, and they sort of canceled each other out somehow or something. I think it could work nice and fast. ==Lyrics==
They say it can't be done. They say I'm wasting my time. But they have never seen one quite as determined as I am. I'm gonna see you tonight. I'm gonna drink you back to life. Each time I finish one, I tell 'em, "Gimme one more." Each time they open their mouths, I tell 'em, "Shut up and pour." I'm gonna see you tonight. I'm gonna drink you back to life.
Notes
Wrote this all in one go back at Silver Bay this summer. Isn't inherently country musically, but I think the subject matter qualifies it. Could use a piano. Could use a nice backbeat over the second verse?

I set out to write twelve country songs this year. A few of these aren't country to the core; some are a little jazzy or showtunesy. Some are just plain old songs without much stylistic distinction that I figured could be played with a country arrangement. But I'm going to gloss over those failures and call the enterprise a success, assuming I can get the last few demos up before 2010. ==== Notes on Chord Notation ====
*I use capital letters for Major chords and Augmented chords.
*I use lower case letters for minor and diminished chords.
*I use 0 for diminished and % for half-diminished chords.
*I use + for augmented chords.
*I use a slash when a note other than the root of the chord is at the bottom, so C/G is C major with a G in the bass.
*I use simply 7 for minor sevenths and M7 for major sevenths.
*Where there's a note in the chord that I don't know how to explain in the name, I'll often put in an "add". For an F major triad with a G in it, I might write "Fadd9". I don't want to write F9 because I think a ninth chord has a minor seventh in it by default.
