I had a dream the other night that I was setting up my farfisa in free parking space in a grassy parking lot on top of a building on Van Ness St., and my farfisa for some reason was way bigger, with an extension keyboard that fanned out on the side. I plugged it into the car parked next to me for power and wrote a song that went:

a feeling definitely

The lyrics were G/B/C/A to go along with the chords. There were also backing vocals I asked my 6-year-old niece Grace to write down: sho oh oh oh oh... after each line.

Anyway, when I remembered this later after waking up I thought it was pretty funny, so I tried the chords out and found that they sound kind of nice together. I made the chorus with the remaining chords I could think of. Still working on lyrics.

hmm. i've been working on a new version of this for some time. actually this is the fourth fully finished version of this song since i scrapped the original. the old pre-chorus is now the bridge, and the chorus is the only part that stayed the way it was. still not sure if i like this. i never re-wrote a song before. i suppose it is a good thing to learn to do. yay, more sj tunes! it's so nice to hear your voice again! did you get an acoustic at some point? is that you playing it? i'm suspicious.

the name-dropping action in the verse is a little on-the-nose, do you know what i mean? it just seems like you had a list of places to mention... i'm just not sure what i should be taking away from that list. you should try writing a version of the verses that don't rhyme and see what happens. i think the melody is nice, though. not mind blowing, but a solid verse melody. you might want to just go for a straight up list song, like, "we didn't start the fire" or something. no shame in that.

the chorus, though, is a great lil' hook. and i like the words, too, though they don't seem to have an obvious connection to the verses. for some reason, i really like the pseudo-rhyme of "love" and "adjust". alot. the melody is really great, one of those really catchy ones you just seem to fire off effortlessly. i like where it is in your range, too; you sound lovely singing high up like that.

have you thought at all about the arrangement of this one? seems like it could be a later-era cure type song.

man, i would love to make this sound like the cure. i was trying to leave it spare so maybe the parents could play around with it. the verse actually just comes from a conversation i had with olivier that included the first two lines of the first verse, and i was like, hey, that kind of rhymes. but i agree the verses are not particularly strong. i'll have to keep thinking about this one. i was on an almost empty flight from las vegas to indianapolis this morning with my laptop and garageband. found some odd chords and a melody, wrote some lyrics, did the structure very fast because the battery was dying, and now several hours later tidied up the lyrics and recorded vocals. 
 
not sure what i think of this. the lyrics are because i was reading the penguin atlas of ancient civilizations and thought it might be nice to write a song with "ancient history" in it, but then i couldn't really get anywhere with it lyrically. the verse is pretty over the top, which i think is kind of fun, but the chorus is just the same set of chords i use for every chorus. writer's block is such a pain!!!!!!!!! i got a banjo for my birthday, which is awesome, but was only two or three weeks ago and i'm not so good at it yet. but i wanted to try to write a banjo song and this is what i came up with. i wanted it to be faster but wow, finger picking is hard! this is a really crappy demo, just a couple of different melody ideas that played together sound like wobbly harmonies. but anyway, something to play around with a bit, maybe.

I wrote this really quickly tonight based off the first line of another song I was trying to write, and it went places I didn't expect and I think I like it. There are rhymes but they don't work like rhymes very much except in the chorus. It needs a little something for length, maybe a solo and then a third chorus? wow!!!! this song is wonderful. the verse progression isn't one i would expect to hear in a fast pop song, and that works very nicely. mopey subject matter set to a fast pop beat is the best. i really like how the chorus and the verse roll into each other seamlessly, the chorus just sneaks up and clobbers you and then you are right back into the verse. add more choruses! your voice sounds really nice up high like this, but i have to really try hard to hear some of the words, mainly in verses, due to the fuzziness of the recording.[[User:Sara|Sara]] 10:39, 20 April 2009 (PDT)

was trying to write something with less words. sort of limited on instrumentation around here these days. i'm going to re-do the melodica part to be less boring/off-tempo. this is just sort of a scratch version for the sake of having something down.

i'm not sure about the structure for this. the la-la part goes on a bit (!), and the drums should be different under the chorus. and maybe there should be one less verse and one more chorus, or more of a build from the quiet part after the second chorus. i'm not sure.

i'm also a little worried that the melody is kind of generic/ripped off from someplace else. that was the part i came up with first, but i had to wait a week or so to find time to record so i was thinking about this and singing it a lot before recording, so maybe that is why it sounds familiar now. but it also sounds a little like "someday" by the strokes, or "where did our love go?" by the supremes. of course, it's pop music so maybe i shouldn't worry about it. :)

i guess i've been trying to write a song about chicago lately. i've been taking a class in los altos, which is about an hour away from san francisco, going south on caltrain. i've been trying to use the transit time to work on music. this is what i came up with somewhere around redwood city tonight.

have you thought at all about the arrangement of this one? seems like it could be a later-era cure type song.
