click the link at the very top right and follow the instructions to become a user of the wiki. this is good because it lets the wiki keep track of your every move (when you are logged in). click on the "recent" link in the sidebar to the left to see what i mean.

==creating a new page in the wiki==
new wiki pages are created when you make a link to them from an existing page.

so all you need to do to create a new page for yourself is click the "edit" tab above and add a link with your name to the above list.

your new line in the list should look like this (you'll see the other links formatted this way in wiki code when you are editing):
<nowiki>*[[your name (location)]]</nowiki>

:asterisk is a bullet.
:pound sign makes a numbered list.
:double square brackets make a link.
links are the text that is enclosed in double square brackets: <nowiki>[[link]]</nowiki>
#click the "edit" tab above to edit this (or any) page,
#create your link by typing the page title in double square brackets,
#click "Save page,"
#click on your new link, and
#the page will open ready to edit.
once you save the page you just created, that page will exist in the wiki, and you can visit it to edit it however you like.

make sure the link is a title that you like, because the text of your link will be the name of the page, and that name will show at the top when the page is viewed. (you can change that later too, but it is a multi-step process, so it's better to start off with a title you like).

for more information about how to write wiki formatting code (it's easy!) look at [http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/Basic_Wiki_Formatting this page] (from a they might be giants wiki, of all things).

==adding your personal category to the members category==
there's a line you totally need to have on your member page! we're not really using this very page (members) as the members page, since a wiki "category" will keep track of members better than we will.

so, add the following line to your member page, and you will automatically be added to the members category:

<nowiki>[[Category:Members]]</nowiki>

so when people click on the word "members" in the sidebar at the left there, you'll be there.

==adding your song to the songs category==
same deal with your song pages:

add this line:

<nowiki>[[Category:Songs]]</nowiki>

to each song page, and they'll be in the song category, so when you click the "songs" link on the left, your songs will be there with the rest!

==formatting your pages by copying gabe's code==
for the most part when making your pages, you can:
#go to [[gabe mcelwain (chicago)|one of gabe's pages]] of a similar nature,
#click the edit tab,
#copy all the text from the editing window, and
#paste it into your new page.
that way it is easy to format.

==three SUPER IMPORTANT notes about wiki!==
#you can edit anyone's pages. this means if you go to gabe's page to gank his lovely formatting code, and really gank it (or delete it, or otherwise screw it up), and save it that way, any changes you made will be saved! poor gabe! so bear that in mind and be careful when editing. this is a nice feature because it allows you to leave comments on other people's songs, but it is kind of dangerous!
#;
#alt-d is wiki slang for "delete the current page." this is an extremely stupid hotkey but there it is. someday i will disable it. in the meantime, if you want to navigate elsewhere, please just click in the address bar instead of using this keyboard shortcut. thank you.
#:
#an easy way to sign and datestamp your comments or other work is to type in four tildes in a row, like:
#::<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>
#:i think that is my favorite wiki tag at the moment because it generates useful text from an adorable squiggly line.

==confused?==
please click the "discussion" tab above and leave a comment there if any of this is total nonsense.
This is a song Chris and I wrote and I performed with Travis at Chris and Lizzie's wedding.

Chris wrote the lyrics and worked up a melody, I took that and expanded upon it and worked up some chords to go around it. I wrote chords and a melody for a bridge, and then Chris wrote lyrics for that part, as well. Travis added some sweet bells, and with luck we'll record a version of this soon.
Update: Recording in progress after Megan and I stopped by to visit Travis in Ithaca! Recording will feature Megan on lovely backing vox!
== Lyrics ==

i was as shocked as anyone
the outcome clear, the devil won
and i was left holding on
frozen in the evening sun
i will have to endure their stares
but at least i won't suffer their nightmares

yellow in the morning, blue at night
pale as a whisper, a blinding sight
a shock of my hair was gone
my face was marked by her scorn
scrapes and cuts, from god knows what
better i never know, or i won't let go

i take it back

given time to think it through, i know i would have done things differently
as it was, the air perfumed, i let myself get washed away

i take it back

a week of fasting, my blood is clean
inertia holds me vespertine
the morning will waste away
my shadow growing every day
coloring my memory
until it's all blankly tragedy

i take it back

Robot, can you hear me?
Did your maker give you ears?
I have some instructions for you
Regarding how to behave now that winter is here

Robot, when it’s cold out
It takes effort to keep warm
And though friction’s a good source of heat
It’ll wear out your hardware and tire your battery

That’s why
Everyone needs vacation
Both creator and creation
So let’s celebrate this occasion
To shut down

Robot, have you noticed
How the lights light up the homes
That’s what we do in winter
To combat the oppression of darkness and cold

Robot, are you lonely?
Are there others of your kind?
Perhaps they are right by your side
Or perhaps they are somewhere remote and quite hard to find

What is a bot to do
When there’s always more stuff to produce?
And what is a bot to say
When there’s always more work on the way?

Oh
Everyone needs vacation
Both creators and creation
So let’s celebrate this occasion
To embark on a migration
To our
Holiday destination
Where we’ll join our kin and mates in

I met my old friend in the CVS
looked like he hadn't aged a day
I walked up to him in the shampoo aisle
and we hugged so long we swayed

"I haven't seen you since your ascension!"
"I heard you got a wife"
He said that business is always good
when you're selling eternal life

we laughed and linked arms just like old times
and went downtown on the trolley
somebody asked us if we were gay
and we said "no, we're just jolly!"

we reminisced about our years at school
and of our days fighting crime
back when you taught me to walk on the pool
oh, the bittersweet passing of time!
we walked on through the town all night
then we high-fived and soared out of sight.
Words and Music by D. E. Healy

There's a tree in the house
There's a tree in the room
and it's filling the air
with its sticky perfume
And we're filling ourselves
up with holiday cheer
and we're all gettin' lit
like we do every year

CHORUS:
If we drink, let's drink to our health
To belief in the absence of proof
To the gifts we can give, to the wealth
we've been blessed with
To peace on earth under this roof

So we gather around
in th'agreed-upon hue
and we wait for the timer
and smile on cue
So if anyone asks
then the picture will show
we had something in common
How else would they know?

CHORUS

There are lights on the house
There are lights on the snow
and it's loud and it's crowded
But this crowd we know
We all find our way here
every year just because
we've got family at Christmas
Not everyone does
I met my old friend in the CVS
looked like he hadn't aged a day
I walked up to him in the shampoo aisle
and we hugged so long we swayed

"I haven't seen you since your ascension!"
"I heard you got a wife"
He said that business is always good
when you're selling eternal life

we laughed and linked arms just like old times
and went downtown on the trolley
somebody asked us if we were gay
and we said "no, we're just jolly!"

we reminisced about our years at school
and of our days fighting crime
back when you taught me to walk on the pool
oh, the bittersweet passing of time!
Words and Music by D. E. Healy

There's a tree in the house
There's a tree in the room
and it's filling the air
with its sticky perfume
And we're filling ourselves
up with holiday cheer
and we're all gettin' lit
like we do every year

CHORUS:
If we drink, let's drink to our health
To belief in the absence of proof
To the gifts we can give, to the wealth
we've been blessed with
To peace on earth under this roof

So we gather around
in th'agreed-upon hue
and we wait for the timer
and smile on cue
So if anyone asks
then the picture will show
we had something in common
How else would they know?

CHORUS

There are lights on the house
There are lights on the snow
and it's loud and it's crowded
But this crowd we know
We all find our way here
every year just because
we've got family at Christmas
Not everyone does

Robot, can you hear me?
Did your maker give you ears?
I have some instructions for you
Regarding how to behave now that winter is here

Robot, when it’s cold out
It takes effort to keep warm
And though friction’s a good source of heat
It’ll wear out your hardware and tire your battery

That’s why
Everyone needs vacation
Both creator and creation
So let’s celebrate this occasion
To shut down

Robot, have you noticed
How the lights light up the homes
That’s what we do in winter
To combat the oppression of darkness and cold

Robot, are you lonely?
Are there others of your kind?
Perhaps they are right by your side
Or perhaps they are somewhere remote and quite hard to find

What is a bot to do
When there’s always more stuff to produce?
And what is a bot to say
When there’s always more work on the way?

Oh

Robot, can you hear me?
Did your maker give you ears?
I have some instructions for you
Regarding how to behave now that winter is here

Robot, when it’s cold out
It takes effort to keep warm
And though friction’s a good source of heat
It’ll wear out your hardware and tire your battery

That’s why
Everyone needs vacation
Both creator and creation
So let’s celebrate this occasion
To shut down

Robot, have you noticed
How the lights light up the homes
That’s what we do in winter
To combat the oppression of darkness and cold

Robot, are you lonely?
Are there others of your kind?
Perhaps they are right by your side
Or perhaps they are somewhere remote and quite hard to find

What is a bot to do
When there’s always more stuff to produce?
And what is a bot to say
When there’s always more work on the way?

Oh
Everyone needs vacation
Both creators and creation
So let’s celebrate this occasion
To embark on a migration
I met my old friend in the CVS
looked like he hadn't aged a day
I walked up to him in the shampoo aisle
and we hugged so long we swayed

"I haven't seen you since your ascension!"
"I heard you got a wife"
He said that business is always good
when you're selling eternal life

we laughed and linked arms just like old times
and went downtown on the trolley
somebody asked us if we were gay
and we said "no, we're just jolly!"

we reminisced about our years at school
and of our days fighting crime
back when you taught me to walk on the pool
oh, the bittersweet passing of time!
we walked on through the town all night
then we high-fived and soared out of sight.
Words and Music by D. E. Healy

There's a tree in the house
There's a tree in the room
and it's filling the air
with its sticky perfume
And we're filling ourselves
up with holiday cheer
and we're all gettin' lit
like we do every year

CHORUS:
If we drink, let's drink to our health
To belief in the absence of proof
To the gifts we can give, to the wealth
we've been blessed with
To peace on earth under this roof

So we gather around
in th'agreed-upon hue
and we wait for the timer
and smile on cue
So if anyone asks
then the picture will show
we had something in common
How else would they know?

CHORUS

There are lights on the house
There are lights on the snow
and it's loud and it's crowded
But this crowd we know
We all find our way here
every year just because
we've got family at Christmas
Not everyone does
I met my old friend in the CVS
looked like he hadn't aged a day
I walked up to him in the shampoo aisle
and we hugged so long we swayed

"I haven't seen you since your ascension!"
"I heard you got a wife"
He said that business is always good
when you're selling eternal life

we laughed and linked arms just like old times
and went downtown on the trolley
somebody asked us if we were gay
and we said "no, we're just jolly!"

we reminisced about our years at school
and of our days fighting crime
back when you taught me to walk on the pool
oh, the bittersweet passing of time!
Words and Music by D. E. Healy

There's a tree in the house
There's a tree in the room
and it's filling the air
with its sticky perfume
And we're filling ourselves
up with holiday cheer
and we're all gettin' lit
like we do every year

CHORUS:
If we drink, let's drink to our health
To belief in the absence of proof
To the gifts we can give, to the wealth
we've been blessed with
To peace on earth under this roof

So we gather around
in th'agreed-upon hue
and we wait for the timer
and smile on cue
So if anyone asks
then the picture will show
we had something in common
How else would they know?

CHORUS

There are lights on the house
There are lights on the snow
and it's loud and it's crowded
But this crowd we know
We all find our way here
every year just because
we've got family at Christmas
Not everyone does
Where we’ll join our kin and mates in
Singing
Everyone needs vacation
Both creators and creation
so let's celebrate this occasion
To shut down

How do robots pass the winter,
with their logic frozen stiff?
How do they celebrate the season,
without real emotion circuits?
And what, pray tell, do robots think
deep down in their hard drives,
when the season has changed over,
and they must resume their lives?
===The Lyrics===

words and music and performed by Youthsadream

I met my old friend in the CVS
looked like he hadn't aged a day
I walked up to him in the shampoo aisle
and we hugged so long we swayed

"I haven't seen you since your ascension!"
"I heard you got a wife"
He said that business is always good
when you're selling eternal life

we laughed and linked arms just like old times
and went downtown on the trolley
somebody asked us if we were gay
and we said "no, we're just jolly!"

we reminisced about our years at school
and of our days fighting crime
back when you taught me to walk on the pool
oh, the bittersweet passing of time!

we walked on through the town all night
then we high-fived and soared out of sight.

===The Request===

D. E. Healy
who is the imagined singer: santa claus
who is the intended listener: jesus christ
1. is it awkward when santa and jesus run into each other?
2. did they ever team up to fight crime?
3. is there room enough in the town of our hearts for both of them?
Words and Music by D. E. Healy

There's a tree in the house
There's a tree in the room
and it's filling the air
with its sticky perfume
And we're filling ourselves
up with holiday cheer
and we're all gettin' lit
like we do every year

CHORUS:
If we drink, let's drink to our health
To belief in the absence of proof
To the gifts we can give, to the wealth
we've been blessed with
To peace on earth under this roof

So we gather around
in th'agreed-upon hue
and we wait for the timer
and smile on cue
So if anyone asks
then the picture will show
we had something in common
How else would they know?

CHORUS

There are lights on the house
There are lights on the snow
and it's loud and it's crowded
But this crowd we know
We all find our way here
every year just because
we've got family at Christmas
Not everyone does

CHORUS

===the request===
who is the imagined singer: 20 somethings coming home for the holidays
who is the intended listener: our really big families
ask three questions:
1. Could we all get along *without* all the champagne and alcohol?
2. Why do we have to wear matching shirts and blue jeans for the family holiday picture?
3. What is the true meaning of Christmas?
who is the intended listener: the dark
ask three questions:
Is it really so bad to live in the dark all the time?
What can the light do for us?
How can we save on our energy bills in the winter?
This is a song Chris and I wrote and I performed with Travis at Chris and Lizzie's wedding.

Chris wrote the lyrics and worked up a the melody, I took that and expanded upon it and worked up some chords to go around it. I wrote chords and a melody for a bridge, and then Chris wrote lyrics for that part, as well. Travis added some sweet bells, and with luck we'll record a version of this soon.
i was as shocked as anyone
the outcome clear, the devil won
and i was left holding on
frozen in the evening sun
yellow in the morning, blue at night
pale as a whisper, a blinding sight
better i never know, or i won't let go

i take it back
== Lyrics ==

i was as shocked as anyone
the outcome clear, the devil won
and i was left holding on
frozen in the evening sun
i will have to endure their stares
but at least i won't suffer their nightmares

yellow in the morning, blue at night
pale as a whisper, a blinding sight
a shock of my hair was gone
my face was marked by her scorn
scrapes and cuts, from god knows what
better i never know, or i won't let go

i take it back

given time to think it through, i know i would have done things differently
as it was, the air perfumed, i let myself get washed away

i take it back

a week of fasting, my blood is clean
inertia holds me vespertine
the morning will waste away
my shadow growing every day
coloring my memory
until it's all blankly tragedy

==creating a wiki login==
click the link at the very top right and follow the instructions to become a user of the wiki. this is good because it lets the wiki keep track of your every move (when you are logged in). click on the "recent" link in the sidebar to the left to see what i mean.

if you don't create a login, the wiki will just track your ip address.... yawn.

==creating a new page in the wiki==
new wiki pages are created when you make a link to them from an existing page.

so all you need to do to create a new page for yourself is click the "edit" tab above and add a link with your name to the above list.

your new line in the list should look like this (you'll see the other links formatted this way in wiki code when you are editing):
<nowiki>*[[your name (location)]]</nowiki>

:asterisk is a bullet.
:double square brackets make a link.
links are the text that is enclosed in double square brackets: <nowiki>[[link]]</nowiki>
#edit this (or any) page,
#create your link by typing the page title in double square brackets,
#click "Save page,"

==adding your personal page to the members category==
there's a line you totally need to have on your member page! we're not really using this very page (members) as the members page, since a wiki "category" will keep track of members better than we will.

so, add the following line to your member page, and you will automatically be added to the members category:

<nowiki>[[Category:Members]]</nowiki>

so when people click on the word "members" in the sidebar at the left there, you'll be there.

==adding your song to the songs category==
same deal with your song pages:

add this line:

<nowiki>[[Category:Songs]]</nowiki>

to each song page, and they'll be in the song category, so when you click the "songs" link on the left, your songs will be there with the rest!

==formatting your pages by copying gabe's code==
for the most part when making your pages, you can:

#;
#::<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>
#:i think that is my favorite wiki tag at the moment because it generates useful text from an adorable squiggly line.

==confused?==
please click the "discussion" tab above and leave a comment there if any of this is total nonsense.
