"Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time"

You're The One For You - MP3

Lyrics

i spent years of my life
thinking we were made for each other
now i see you used those years to prove
that you weren't made for anybody else
you don't need anybody's help
because you are the one for you

there are plenty of fish in the sea
gentlemen of all sizes and colors
surely you could find a boy who suits your fancy
but you don't see the use in their good looks
you can't be bothered to bait hooks
you've got better things to do

some folks search far and wide
to find the loves of their lives
amidst the millions of faces love begat
what a relief it's got to be
to find the only love you'll ever need
located on the premises
what were the odds of that?

when you pack up your heart you should bring
only the things you think you can carry
which won't be much if you'll be holding your own hand
and should you need a kiss, if ever
press your own two lips together
put your blessed symmetry to use

each half designed to fit the other
maybe one day you'll discover
what that means
you are the one for you

Music

Chords

This song is in F major, if I remember correctly.

Structure

A A B A' (The nearest I've gotten to date to the old standard A B A structure.)

Author's Notes

This is the nastiest, bitterest song I've ever written. I tried to make it pretty anyway.

When I write these jazzy types of songs, I often go off on a harmonic tangent on the bridge, and then can't find my way back to the home key effectively. I feel like the transition back into the A section here is a little forced, but I think if I change the melody at the end of the bridge, I can make it lead back into the A section more smoothly.
