ideas for site structure
i think it makes sense for each song to have its own entry/page, and for song pages to follow a basic template, something like:
song entries should have
- a link to the song file
- maybe a fun picture to go with it
- section for lyrics
- section for displaying the structure?
- section for chords/musical notation?
- section for author's notes/analysis
- section for other people to comment/make suggestions
then we can make entires for each person with:
person pages
- short bios?
- funny pictures?
- most importantly: links to all their songs
- links to their other sites/bands
ok!
i added some php lines about categories. also i added the categories tag at the bottom of the Circles page. is that what you mean? it seems to kind of work although i'm not sure how to tag images and things like that. although it seems to be possible according to the help text.

yay!
yes, adding those category tags is what i mean. it seems to be displaying oddly at the bottom of the page though. rather than just saying "category: songs" it says that and then has another line underneath that gives another "songs" link. i'm not sure why it duplicated like that.
i don't think we'd need to tag images, just pages that belong to groups of things on the site. like a songs category, and a members category, i guess. we could also... hmmm. make a cross section of those somehow, so you could see one person's songs at a time. probably add categories for each person, as well.
?
p.s. how's you get it to timestamp your comment like that, with your name? that's rad.
hiphip!
yeah, the category looks weird. maybe my tag is wrong? [[Category:Songs]]? or maybe i goofed something up in the php file. hmmm. back to the mediawiki help files for me! and the sig/timestamps is ~~~~. just a timestamp requires one more tilde. i just learned that two days ago. very exciting stuff!:)

tildes forever
wow, thanks for the tilde tip.
i think the category tag is correct, as it seems to be reflecting the proper structure. i think maybe the php got bumped at some point.
also, it occurs to me that the members page could be replaced by a page displaying the members category. i think that'll be less work, yes?
here goes...

aha!
i had enabled subpages and experimental dmoz style backlinks? or i had not enabled category magic. in any case it looks better now.
are you making the members category?
this is going to be so excellent!
Sara 14:56, 29 August 2006 (PDT)
rad x infinity
awesome. i'm leaving work now, so i'll check up on this action after dinner tonight.
i will add a "members" category (all you have to do to do that is tag some pages with it, i think) unless you beat me to it.
maybe i'll call you tonight for more wikichat!
again: this is a super cool thing; i hope it lasts many years.
Gabemcelwain 15:03, 29 August 2006 (PDT)
got it
now songs and members are both category pages, including the links from the sidebar navigation.
and chatting later would be super nice! i am going to the gym after work for a bit though, and won't be home until 9 or so my time, which is 11 or so your time. if you are still up by then, call me!:)

what should the main page look like?
i'm trying to set your awesome image as the logo, but so far no luck. still messing with the php.
Sara 09:22, 30 August 2006 (PDT)
logo
awesome, there it is!
i had no way to test it out. i'll send you one without the fade to white at the bottom tonight.
i know the "a wiki for songs" is almost illegible, but i think it's cool anyway. am i correct?
Gabemcelwain 09:59, 30 August 2006 (PDT)
yep!
it's totally excellent.
the ideal logo size is 135 squared.
Sara 10:15, 30 August 2006 (PDT)
new logo uploaded!
new small image for logo:

got it
the new logo should show up now. there's a cool trick for how to clear your cache by typing something in the address bar. i'll look it up tomorrow. Sara 23:00, 30 August 2006 (PDT)
