If we're ever together in Chicago again

I would take you out to eat at Soul Vegetarian

We could take the El to Reckless, and then

Walk off our fingers for Sarah and Slumberland

And when we grow more hippie than hip let's get haircuts at Milio's

When we wear our suits out at Ragstock we'll get new clothes

We'll reconvene in the museum's hall of armor

To plan our next embattled capture

Either the world or you turned away

Either the world or you turned away

You either fell in or out of love

You either fell in or out of love

If we're ever together in Chicago again

If they're still there we'll go to Buddy and Heaven

You know we cut our teeth at basement shows

No one would believe we're from around here now, though

We could ride from the Shedd to the Garfield gardens

Get to the Point and jump off at the deep end

Or if it's not August we'll plant ourselves on a bench

And wait until summer has a chance to sink her teeth in

man, i would love to make this sound like the cure. i was trying to leave it spare so maybe the parents could play around with it. the verse actually just comes from a conversation i had with olivier that included the first two lines of the first verse, and i was like, hey, that kind of rhymes. but i agree the verses are not particularly strong. i'll have to keep thinking about this one. Get You Back no verses

Lyrics

Either the world or you turned away
You either fell in or out of love
Seems like it takes forever each day
But suddenly you just adjust
Did you forget what it was we were trying to say
Forget what it meant to feel that way
I'll get you back one day
I'll get you back one day

Songwriter Notes

i guess i've been trying to write a song about chicago lately. i've been taking a class in los altos, which is about an hour away from san francisco, going south on caltrain. i've been trying to use the transit time to work on music. this is what i came up with somewhere around redwood city tonight.

yay, more sj tunes! it's so nice to hear your voice again! did you get an acoustic at some point? is that you playing it? i'm suspicious.

the name-dropping action in the verse is a little on-the-nose, do you know what i mean? it just seems like you had a list of places to mention... i'm just not sure what i should be taking away from that list. you should try writing a version of the verses that don't rhyme and see what happens. i think the melody is nice, though. not mind blowing, but a solid verse melody. you might want to just go for a straight up list song, like, "we didn't start the fire" or something. no shame in that.

the chorus, though, is a great lil' hook. and i like the words, too, though they don't seem to have an obvious connection to the verses. for some reason, i really like the pseudo-rhyme of "love" and "adjust". alot. the melody is really great, one of those really catchy ones you just seem to fire off effortlessly. i like where it is in your range, too; you sound lovely singing high up like that.

have you thought at all about the arrangement of this one? seems like it could be a later-era cure type song.

great to see you posting again! makes my day!
