Get You Back no verses
Get You Back, version 2

Lyrics

I was forgiving
I was forgetting
I was all for letting you
Get away with everything
But that was then and
You know what that means

I am not gonna take the fall anymore
When I don't even know who you are anymore

Well you spread your wings well
You'd never let me
No more second guessing
What did that get me?
I don't know why you get to decide for us all
These days no one gets away with everything anymore

Did you forget what it was we were trying to say
Forget what it meant to feel this way
I'll get you back one day
I'll get you back one day

The world or you turned away
You either fell in or out of love
Seems like it takes forever every day
Then suddenly you just adjust

Did you forget what it was we were trying to say
Forget what it meant to feel this way
I'll get you back one day
I'll get you back one day

Songwriter Notes

hmm. i've been working on a new version of this for some time. actually this is the fourth fully finished version of this song since i scrapped the original. the old pre-chorus is now the bridge, and the chorus is the only part that stayed the way it was. still not sure if i like this. i never re-wrote a song before. i suppose it is a good thing to learn to do. yay, more sj tunes! it's so nice to hear your voice again! did you get an acoustic at some point? is that you playing it? i'm suspicious.

the name-dropping action in the verse is a little on-the-nose, do you know what i mean? it just seems like you had a list of places to mention... i'm just not sure what i should be taking away from that list. you should try writing a version of the verses that don't rhyme and see what happens. i think the melody is nice, though. not mind blowing, but a solid verse melody. you might want to just go for a straight up list song, like, "we didn't start the fire" or something. no shame in that.

the chorus, though, is a great lil' hook. and i like the words, too, though they don't seem to have an obvious connection to the verses. for some reason, i really like the pseudo-rhyme of "love" and "adjust". alot. the melody is really great, one of those really catchy ones you just seem to fire off effortlessly. i like where it is in your range, too; you sound lovely singing high up like that.

have you thought at all about the arrangement of this one? seems like it could be a later-era cure type song.

great to see you posting again! makes my day!

man, i would love to make this sound like the cure. i was trying to leave it spare so maybe the parents could play around with it. the verse actually just comes from a conversation i had with olivier that included the first two lines of the first verse, and i was like, hey, that kind of rhymes. but i agree the verses are not particularly strong. i'll have to keep thinking about this one. ok, i really like the verse melody on this version. i really like how the melody goes up at the end, it's a great transitional tactic. i like the repeated melodic figures in the prechorus ("when i don't/even know"). also, the "oh-oh /i'll get you back" melodic repeat is great. fun beats all around, too. yeah, i have rewritten some things from scratch a few times now, most notably Come Back To Bed, and i always feel a little weird about it, too. still, awesome to see new sj action. keep it coming!
