California II - MP3

Lyrics

You went down to Mexico, I'll be here when you get back to California
And I wonder if you know that I'll be here when you get back, I wonder if they warned you
You like women and fast cars, drinking coffee, smoke cigars out on your own
You been on the road so long when I ask you where you're from it don't sound like home

Don't you know that I don't fly no clay kites
I'm cold as stone and drowning in your headlights
Barstow, Arco, Sholow,
I know you meant a lot to me before
But I don't want to see you any more

You got on the road tonight just about two hours behind and kept your lights low
And the starts were shining down, cast their will upon the ground to light the snow
You like whiskey and fast cars, drinking coffee, smoke cigars to keep you warm
I can't help wondering if I'm waiting for the sun to rise or riding out the storm

Don't you know that I don't fly no clay kites
I'm cold as stone and drowning in your headlights
Barstow, Arco, Sholow,
I know you meant a lot to me before
But I don't want to see you any more
Flagstaff, Carlsbad, Moab
I know you meant a lot to me before
But I don't want to see you any more

Notes

Yes. This song is really awesome. I can't wait to record a version of it with you! I didn't hear all the words when we were playing it before, and you made some comment about how they aren't as meticulously constructed as some country songs' lyrics might be. But I think you may have underestimated them. I mean, they're not dripping with perfect internal rhymes or anything, but I really like a lot of the imagery, even stuff I don't understand (clay kites?). There seems to be some conflicting stuff happening in the story if you read it all literally, as far as where characters are when, but the sum of the parts seems to me to be a really evocative description of someone navigating and measuring and needing and resenting the distance between him/herself and the other person. It's maybe a bit more expressionistic than I allow myself to get, but that makes me like it. This is a high quality song. Let's play it over and over! Gabemcelwain 11:31, 9 February 2009 (PST)

YES! Two new becky songs! I can't wait to hear them!! Conorl 16:20, 9 February 2009 (PST)

Added a recording from practice last night! I notice that in the second verse, "whiskey" is now, "women" and "coffee" is "whiskey". Improvements, I would say. I clearly need to play some memorable little licks in the transitions after the choruses. And maybe some harmonies on the prechorus? We'll see! Gabemcelwain 17:13, 12 March 2009 (PDT)
