I Got News For You - MP3

lyrics

you got yourself a girl and the world is your oyster
you never doubted that you chose right when you choiced her
you think she means it when she says she'll always be true
i hate to be the one to break it but...
i got news for you

how to put this? not to be dramatic
rest assured i'll be as diplomatic
as a man in my position has the luxury to
i hate to be the one to break it but...
i got news for you

extra! extra! afternoon edition!
i've got some information here regarding the condition of
a certain reputation you've been operating under
a complete misapprehension once i have your full attention
i will give it to you straight the best way out is through
i hate to be the one to break it but...
i got news for you

i got news for you
it's the worst kind
it'll blow you to
bits i know
hope you make a quick study
i'd lie if i could
i got news for you, buddy
and the news ain't good

notes

this is obviously for a stage musical in which the protagonist's friend is trying to tell the protagonist that the woman he has fallen for is no good, and of course the protagonist doesn't want to hear it, so he gets more and more insistent. (the friend is only trying to spare the protagonist some heartbreak, but it becomes clear later that the girl's reputation has been unfairly besmirched. is besmirched a word? yes. sweet. of course then the protagonist has to choose who to trust--his best friend, or his lady love! but that's another number.)

i wrote the lyrics for the first and third stanzas months ago, forgot about them completely, and then rediscovered them last night when i added words for the second stanza and "chorus". i wrote the music this morning. the tempo should be pretty even. on this, i'm drawing out the changes in the chorus, but that's just because i'm trying to remember how to play them and i wanted to get it down fast.

ideally this one should have a nice, brassy, big band shuffle with horn stabs on the offbeats and stuff. some day i'll hire someone to arrange my nonsense.

also, this should probably be sung with a new york accent. i tried, but i don't have one.
