love story in reverse (mp3)

lest our hearts unwind
and our stars misalign
and the rise of love in our hearts decline
as we part unaquatinted in time
let not our lovely love story run its course and rewind
and rewind

Songwriter Notes

more fun with modulation. i wrote the chords around 7pm tonight when i finished work. i was still messing around with modulating between Aminor/Cmajor and Cminor/Eflat major. For the words I did a little free writing and eventually hit on the word decline, then stars misalign, then the idea for a love story in reverse. once i had that in mind the words came pretty quickly. this performance is pretty shaky, but its late and i feel bad playing the song anymore tonight. holy cow. these changes are just blowing my mind. i have always been really afraid to wander too far from the key i start in, but this stuff is an awesome! it's so... linear! the effect it has on me is one i didn't expect, which is that i have to listen closer, more carefully when i realize i can't take the resolutions for granted. it puts me on edge a little, actually. i'm such a pop softie that when you resolve stuff in weird ways it throws me. i'm going to have to go home and play this. what's really interesting is that i think this is catchy, i mean the melody is really nice. but it's catchy once removed or something. like, you can't commit it to memory on a first listen because it does unexpected things. but i think once i can get this into my head, it'll be especially hard to get out. in part because of that extra listening i'll have had to do. fascinating!
