smile where the rainbow fell down

Lyrics

what's not clicking
did the stock ticker stop ticking
her tune
what's so unsettling
did our creditors remember our debts
are due

nothing but blue skies
blue skies from now on
with a smile where the rainbow fell down

we had a hunch
we should have known the dough it don't roll itself
--how true
and each adjustment
its the sucker taking stock of himself
anew

nothing but blue skies
blue skies from now on
with a smile where the rainbow fell down

Songwriter Notes

i wrote this verse chord progression a couple weeks ago. it actually reminds me of something that could have been a heavy pets song. i think its all the diminished chords. i had an idea that it would be a sort of nutty jazz/blues thing about hard times and the economy. the chorus is a reference to the song nothing but blue skies which was popular before the 1929 crash. i wanted this arrangement to sound like something tom waits could have done, but it doesn't really hit the mark. mostly its my voice. i don't think i come anywhere close to that tom waits sound. i recorded one track of electric guitar and then put some slight effects on in in the computer, then i put in a few electronic drum beats and atmospheric sounds. i double tracked my vocals in two octaves, and put the low track through a "telephone" like effect. I think i was trying to approximate that tom waits sounds, but it really doesn't sound anything like him.
