Lyrics
I could tame any beast. But you're not a beast. You're a race car driver, baby. you made a charm out of broken glass hung it from the rearview of your cadillac you said it's easy to move on and forget the past i'm looking forward to never looking back i remember every day with you from first to last your velvet voice tamed tigers on the grass i was the whiskey in your coffee black you left lipstick on my champagne glass we fought our demons underneath the sheets we drove around in circles to forget about the street you were hotter than an engine on the verge of a crash thought we'd drive to california but we were running out of gas you said it's easy to move on and forget the past and i am looking forward to never looking back i tell my face in the looking glass how i am looking forward to never looking back carolina's perfume in the shotgun seat you swear it was an accident you'd not repeat three shattered faces picking up the glass were looking forward to never looking back racing down the freeway was our favorite sin we held each other like only one of us would win another photo finish but we couldn't bear to look and so we write it off and close another book it's so easy to move on and forget the past i'm looking forward to never looking back i tell my face in the looking glass i'm looking forward to never looking back you drove 100 miles but the future was too fast when you try to leave you're driving circles on the track the great highway can take us anywhere when you look into the mirror you'll always see me there look in the mirror forever and the faces will never change you said it's easy to move on and forget the past i'm looking forward to never looking back i tell my face in the looking glass i'm looking forward to never looking back i tell the only face in the looking glass i'm looking forward to never looking back i'm looking forward to never looking back oooh

Author's Notes
the line "i'm looking forward to never looking back" was a quote from a conversation with this boy i have a terrible crush on and i meant to write a happy song from it, but i guess i only really write sad songs. this is also an effort based on a conversation with emily cooper about trying to write songs that can be summed up in a sentence, in this case "we could have been something together but we're too hung up on not being hung up on our pasts." also i should mention i've been listening to tom waits nonstop, mostly rain dogs, and wrote the rhythm of this melody to the song "jockey full of bourbon" and in awe of the excellent line "i tell you all my secrets but lie about my past" from "tango till they're sore." i <3 tom waits.
Sara 22:37, 13 August 2007 (PDT) - sam and i thoroughly rewrote the lyrics thursday night into friday morning until i had to run to catch a plane. then i spent ten days in the woods to reflect, and here they are. we made a great effort to make them more in the style of mr. waits. successfully, i think.
