the nature of limitation (mp3)

Lyrics

two pairs in a bag
bicycles side by side
and the moon split itself in two

indoors at long last
at the threshold we travel past
to the room "how do you do?"

i have nothing to say
strangely

the nature of limiting
to sever what is from what also is
the grounds of a simile
as oceans form continents

turn around i won't stare
laugh out loud i don't care

there's nothing to say
i'm strangely well contained

Songwriter Notes

Custom Song #8. Here are the questions from leif:

1) What is the nature of limitation?
2) Is laughable laughable again?
3) May we serve out our time at long last?

I started this one lyrics first, but when I sat down to set the words to music it just wasn't working. at deirdre's suggestion i tried dropping them and rewriting an old song. i wrote the chords, melody and first verse to this song back in 2003 but never finished them. Actually this is one of the very last new songs I played with first coat. I had other lyrics that frankly weren't very good.

I like this one, but am not totally happy with the words. I find the nature of limiting section in the middle particularly awkward and wordy. I'd like to straighten that out. I think this could be a very good song with a bit more work. I recorded the vocals and guitar in one take into our AKG mic. The recording is a bit sloppy. It's over compressed and the reverb is weird. I don't think it's worth rerecording until i fix the lyrics though. Conorl 06:00, 21 August 2009 (PDT)

This is lovely and strikes me as Robert Voyer-esque somehow. Great melodies, I especially like the first "strangely," and the resolution of "contained." Gabemcelwain 14:18, 19 August 2009 (PDT)
