enough rope

the well - mp3

Lyrics

we went for a walk in the backyard
we went farther than we'd ever gone before
we found a well gone dry with summer
we found a bucket dangling from a thick rope

you climbed inside and i turned the wheel
it creaked and you rode it down into the darkness
before we could stop it the rope followed
you said you couldn't see anything down there

i said, "throw the rope back up to me"
but the rope was too frayed to be thrown
i said i would go find another
but you said, "please don't leave me alone!"

so i waited for you to climb back up
i waited for hours and you never emerged
i yelled down, "you're not really trying!"
and you said, "climbing's thirsty work"

i poured the milk into the dry well
it grew late and i poured down the wine
we drank our sorrows and toasted shadows
me on the grass and you underground

the sun went down and the stars came up
you climbed back into the bucket and yelled
"pour some clean water, enough clean water,
down and dark to fill up the well
and float me back up to you"
and float you back up to me

i poured the water and some tears
i poured every drop that i could see
and you said, "still this isn't working,
but it's deep enough,
if you want to jump"

Author's Notes

i have been having trouble writing lyrics/songs lately. this is the first thing i've recorded in a month and a half. i finally decided to just write a story and put it to music. not sure if this works, but... breaking the dry spell.

Comments

the organ sound on this makes my day. good tom fills, too. the melody isn't remarkable, but it really works somehow in its repetitive way. some really good lyrics too. i like "climbing is thirsty work" and of course the twist at the end. Gabemcelwain 08:43, 9 July 2007 (PDT)
